Mastermind Robotics Jr., is Sarnia-Lambton’s one and only competitive LEGO robotics community club for youth ages 9 to 14.

Mastermind Robotics Jr. houses a total of 6 competitive FIRST LEGO LEAGUE teams, at the STEM Hub at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Center in Sarnia, Ontario.

Through our specialized programming, teams are guided through the engineering design process and develop competition worthy robots to compete against other teams from around the world.

The Francophone Team

About: FrancoBots Jr. (Team 67834) is a travel team specifically formed for bilingual students in Sarnia-Lambton. The team’s goal is to encourage young students to pursue STEM education in both official languages, and one day aspire to join the Mixed Métal Robotics team as a bilingual team member. This team would have access to French instructor led workshops, would participate in our house league mock competitions and would have the opportunity to travel and compete in at least one FLL regional competition in Ontario.

Qualifications:

  1. Identify as a Francophone minority or attends a French or French immersion school
  2. Age 9 to 14 (Grade 4 to 8)
  3. Enthusiastic about STEM
  4. Responsible & Mature

Cost: $500 (+ Tax) /Student (Additional fees may apply if the team qualifies for provincial and/or world championships).

Season: September to December (Longer if the team qualifies for provincial or world championships)

Team Meets: Tuesdays 5:30pm to 7:30pm

The Rural Team

About: The RoboTillers (Team 67830) is an extraordinary travel team formed for students from Sarnia-Lambton, serving as a vital link between our rural and urban communities while fostering unity through creativity. This dynamic team will gain invaluable experiences through instructor-led workshops, participate in engaging house league mock competitions, and take advantage of the opportunity to travel and compete in at least one prestigious FLL regional competition in Ontario.

Qualifications:

  1. Reside in Sarnia-Lambton
  2. Age 9 to 14 (Grade 4 to 8)
  3. Passionate about STEM and Community
  4. Responsible & Mature

Cost: $500 (+ Tax) /Student (Additional fees may apply if the team qualifies for provincial and/or world championships).

The Synergic Team

About: Team Synergy (Team 67835) is a travel team that leverages students’ diverse skills, strengths and perspectives to create a dynamic and collaborative team. This team would have access to instructor led workshops, would participate in our house league mock competitions and would have the opportunity to travel and compete in at least one FLL regional competition in Ontario.

Qualifications:

  1. Have a unique talent or skill in the arts or STEM
  2. Age 9 to 14 (Grade 4 to 8)
  3. Passionate about STEAM
  4. Responsible & Mature

Cost: $500 (+ Tax) /Student (Additional fees may apply if the team qualifies for provincial and/or world championships).

Season: September to December (Longer if the team qualifies for provincial or world championships)

The Junior Team

About: The Young Masterminds Team is a team for students ages 9 to 10 who demonstrate exceptional abilities in STEM. The team was formed to develop younger members and prepare them to compete for years to come. This team would have access to instructor led workshops, would participate in our house league mock competitions and would have the opportunity to travel and compete in one FLL regional competition in Ontario.

Qualifications:

  1. Gifted or Exceptionally Talented
  2. Age 9 to 10 (Grade 4 to 5)
  3. Enthusiastic about STEM
  4. Responsible & Mature

Cost: $500 (+ Tax) /Student (Additional fees may apply if the team qualifies for provincial and/or world championships).

Season: September to December (Longer if the team qualifies for provincial or world championships)

Team Meets: Thursdays 6:30pm to 8:30pm

The All-Girls Team

About: Team Possible (Team 67831) is an all-girls travel team for students ages 9 to 14 who are passionate about STEM, show exceptional creativity and determination. This team would have access to instructor led workshops, would participate in our house league mock competitions and would have the opportunity to travel and compete in at least one FLL regional competition in Ontario.

Qualifications:

  1. Identify as Female
  2. Age 9 to 14 (Grade 4 to 8)
  3. Passionate about STEM
  4. Responsible & Mature

The Advanced Team

About: SnakeBytes (Team 67832) is the team for coding enthusiasts! To qualify for this specialized travel team you must be ages 9 to 14, a coding fanatic and an individual who loves to be challenged. This team would have access to instructor led workshops, would participate in our house league mock competitions and would have the opportunity to travel and compete in at least one FLL regional competition in Ontario.

Qualifications:

  1. Interested Advanced Coding
  2. Codes for Fun
  3. Age 9 to 14 (Grade 4 to 8)
  4. Passionate about STEM
  5. EXTREMELY Responsible & Mature

Cost: $500 (+ Tax) /Student (Additional fees may apply if the team qualifies for provincial and/or world championships)

Season: September to December (Longer if the team qualifies for provincial or world championships)

FAQ

When does the Program Start and End?

The program starts the week of September 15th, and runs for a minimum of 10 weeks, and may go longer if teams progress beyond the regional competition.

Where is the Program Held?

Our club meetings will be held at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre in Sarnia, ON. 180 College Ave N, Sarnia ON N7T 7X2 

What Days and Times is the Program Held?

Each team meets on a specified day, either on Tuesdays or Thursdays, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, weekly. Please see the team’s calendar.

What Does the Program Cost?

The program costs between $500 per season for each student. Additional fees may apply if the team qualifies for provincial and/or world championships. The $500 registration fee includes the registration to one regional FLL competition for the team. The registration fee does not include the cost of travel to tournaments. All travel costs (meals, gas, mileage, accommodations, etc.) associated with tournaments are at the expenses and discretion of the participants. Parents and Guardians are responsible for the travel to and from tournaments.

How does the Rebate Program Work?

The rebate program offers a cash rebate for different volunteer roles you choose to fill, to a maximum of $250 in rebates per student registered. Pay backs will occur at the end of the robotics season, approximately in the month of February, once the volunteering commitments have been fulfilled. Learn More.

How long is an FIRST LEGO LEAGUE Season?

A typical season runs from Mid-September to Mid-December, unless teams have been selected or awarded the opportunity to compete at the provincial and/or world championships.

What Kind of STEAM Activities will Teams Complete?

Teams will develop creative innovation projects to present to judges. They will also learn how to design, build, code, test, and compete a robot.

What Kind of Awards can Teams Win Through FIRST?
