Mixed Métal’s FTC team, founded by enthusiastic high-school robotics students, serves as an intermediary robotics travel team designed for aspiring innovators aged 12 to 18.
We welcome applications from younger students (e.g., ages 12 to 13) who demonstrate exceptional maturity, a strong work ethic, and a profound passion for STEM. Please note that pre-registration interviews are mandatory for all applicants in this age range.
Through our specialized programming and mentorship provided by seasoned high school seniors and dedicated adult mentors, younger students are granted an exceptional opportunity to engage in hands-on robotics at an entry level. These budding engineers receive guidance through an extensive engineering design process, empowering them to conceptualize, design, and construct competition-ready robots to compete against teams from around the globe.

How did Mixed Métal Start?
Once our three local high school robotics teams (SFX, Franco Jeunesse, and Saint Pats) decided to cease their operations, the Mastermind Youth Foundation took the initiative to reignite Sarnia-Lambton’s robotics programs by developing a community-based robotics team. Much like the process of alloying metals to enhance strength and resilience, our robotics team, Mixed Métal, is forged from a diverse group of students and mentors. Drawing from Sarnia-Lambton’s rich robotics history, we aim to build a stronger, more resilient, and inclusive team like no other.
What is the Age Requirement to Join the Team?
Typically ages 12 to 18, provided they are exceptionally mature, are hardworking and are passionate about STEM.
Is Mixed Métal a Travel Team?
YES! We will attend two regional tournaments, with a chance to move on to the provincials and the world championship.
When does the Program Start and End?
The program starts in early Sept, and runs for a minimum of 12 weeks, and may go longer if the team progresses beyond the regional competitions.
Where is the Program Held?
Our club meetings will be held at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre in Sarnia, ON. 180 College Ave N, Sarnia ON N7T 7X2
What are the Registration funds used for?
Money collected from registration will directly support the robot build, the purchase of materials and tools, and registration fees for the program
What Days and Times is the Program Held?
The schedule will be finalized in December. Parents and Students will be notified via the team calendar. There will be multiple sessions a week.
What Does the Program Cost?
The program costs $500 per season for each student. Additional fees may apply if the team qualifies for provincial and/or world championships. The $500 registration fee includes the registration to at least two regional FTC competitions and workshop sessions for the entire season. The registration fee does not include the cost of travel to tournaments. All travel costs (meals, gas, mileage, accommodations, etc.) associated with tournaments are at the expenses and discretion of the participants. Parents and Guardians are responsible for the travel to and from tournaments.
Are There any Registration Subsidies?
We are accepting County of Lambton YRASP funding!

How long is a FTC Season?
A typical season runs from early-Sept to early-April, unless teams have been selected or awarded the opportunity to compete at the provincial and/or world championships.
How are the Team Roles Assembled?
Team roles are determined by the programs staff based on participants ages, experiences and interests.
What Kind of STEAM Activities will Students Complete?
The team is ran like a small business. Students will learn product development through the engineering design cycle as they design, build, code, test, and compete their robot. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to learn aspects of business, marketing, and health and safety.

Is There a Tuck Shop?
